SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Dhamandhari\, Shimla (HP)
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk at Ekana Wetlands\, Lucknow\, UP \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lucknow\n \n \n \n \n 3 August\, 2025\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Ekana Wetlands \n \n \n \n Ekana Wetlands\, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh)\, lie on the floodplains of the Gomti River and form a mosaic of marshes\, grass patches\, water channels\, and seasonal pools nestled amid the growing urban landscape. This semi-natural wetland acts as a transitional zone between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems\, supporting a wide range of biodiversity\, especially migratory and resident waterbirds. \n \n \n \n With its tall reeds\, shallow waters\, and open skies\, Ekana serves as a critical feeding and nesting site for herons\, ducks\, lapwings\, and raptors. Beyond its role in avian life\, the wetland aids in groundwater recharge\, flood mitigation\, and climate buffering. As Lucknow’s urban sprawl accelerates\, Ekana Wetlands offer vital ecological services and a green refuge for nature to persist within the city’s changing contours. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Partnered with \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird Guide - Prateek KashyapA statistician-turned-wildlifer with over 12 years of birding experience in the Teria\, with key roles in Bengal Florican and Dudhwa Rhino conservation projects. Raptors like Osprey\, Black Kite and Shikra are observed overhead\, while the melodious calls of Asian Koel and Common Hawk-Cuckoo resonate from the trees. The diverse sightings of egrets\, herons\, and ibises such as Little Egret\, Indian Pond-Heron\, Purple Heron\, and Black-headed Ibis further emphasize the health of the wetland ecosystem\, providing crucial foraging and roosting grounds for these water-dependent species. \n \n \n \n The presence of smaller\, colorful birds like Asian Green Bee-eater\, Blue-tailed Bee-eater\, and various prinias and munias adds to the charm\, making Ekana Wetlands a promising site for ornithological studies and recreational birding in Uttar Pradesh. \n \n \n \n \n Bronze-winged Jacana \n \n \n \n Red-wattled Lapwing \n \n \n \n Pheasant-tailed Jacana \n \n \n \n Ashy Prinia \n \n \n \n Little Grebe \n \n \n \n Shikra \n \n \n \n Eurasian Collared Dove \n \n \n \n Little Egret \n \n \n \n Osprey \n \n \n \n Black-winged Stilt \n \n \n \n Indian Spot-billed Duck \n \n \n \n Oriental Magpie Robin \n \n \n \n Lesser Whistling Duck \n \n \n \n Little Cormorant \n \n \n \n Painted Stork \n \n \n \n Grey Heron \n \n \n \n Purple Heron \n \n \n \n Grey-headed Swamphen \n \n \n \n White-throated Kingfisher \n \n \n \n Oriental Darter \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summary of Walk \n \n \n \n The monsoon rains may have been relentless for two days straight in Lucknow\, but so was the enthusiasm at the Ekana Wetland bird walk. Even with the skies opening up since morning and continuing through the walk\, a large group of birders gathered\, embracing both the weather and the thrill of discovery. \n \n \n \n Led by the spirited Prateek Kashyap\, the walk was made even more beginner-friendly thanks to four extra binoculars sent by Ataavi — a thoughtful addition that helped many new participants get their first clear views of the avian wonders around them. \n \n \n \n In just two hours of monsoon birding\, the group recorded an impressive 57 species. The moment of the day came when an Oriental Darter — the elegant “snake bird” — surfaced just behind a real snake gliding through the water\, creating a scene straight out of nature’s playbook. Other highlights included the Clamorous Reed Warbler\, Cotton Pygmy Goose\, Black Bittern\, Cinnamon Bittern\, and Yellow Bittern. The walk was a reminder that\, in birding\, the rain often adds a magic of its own. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Number of Participants \n \n 0

SUMMARY:Bird walk at Gandhari Riverside\, Lalita Ashtekar

Known for documenting rare birds and snakes\, combining field expertise with ecological insight. \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird walk Location \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Common birds of Ekana Wetlands \n \n \n \n Ekana Wetlands\, located in Mastemau East of Ekana Stadium in Lucknow have documented an impressive list of more than 200+ birds\, including a large population of Lesser Whistling-Ducks and Indian Spot-billed Ducks\, alongside the elegant Pheasant-tailed Jacanas and Bronze-winged Jacanas gracefully navigating the aquatic vegetation.
